Tonsil Stones: Symptoms and Treatment

Tonsil stones are whitish/yellowish stones that develop on the crevasses of your throat. They usually form in the tiny holes found in your tonsil and occurs when bacteria, cells, and other debris unable to escape and hardens in your throat. Tonsil stones often lead to bad breath, sore throat, and tonsil swelling which can be very annoying and painful. Here are some symptoms of tonsil stones, simple steps to prevent them from invading your throat and way to cure them if you ever caught one.
Symptoms
First, let’s do a brief discussion on how to know if you may be dealing with tonsil stones. Tonsil stones are usually small in size which makes it difficult to detect during its early stages. Here are some of the following symptoms of a possible case of tonsil stone:
- One of the most common indicators of tonsil stone is a sore throat. If you ever caught yourself in a painful state especially in your throat area, immediately check if there may be possible formation of tonsil stones that could occur. Severe cases of sore throat often indicates a larger probability of getting one since tonsil stones usually develops from the same bacteria caught in while one is suffering from a sore throat. You may also be experiencing a painful sensation in your ear which can also be considered as a symptom.
- Bad breath is also one of the most common symptoms. Bad breath is usually considered as an effect of having tonsil stones. If you ever feel experiencing it which is usually mot normal for you, you may think into considering a possible case of tonsil stone.
- If one develops tonsil stones, a person usually experience swelling of the tonsils due to the inflammation caused by the infection. If you ever find little white spot close to the size of a pea, it may be a developing tonsil stone. Usually, tonsil stones form in the nooks and crannies and may not be very visible which explains why it is at times difficult to spot them.
Treatment
When it comes to getting the best method for tonsil stones treatment usually depends on the size and location of the tonsil stone in your throat. Some tonsil stone are well-hidden which makes it difficult to cure. You may not need to treat tonsil stones if they are small ones. On the other hand, if ever it needs treatment, here are some of the following steps you may want to consider:
- You may use a cotton swab or use picks to loosen the tonsil stones and push it out.
- You may also want to try to gargle salt water which softens the tonsil stones clasp on your throat which will makes it easier to remove.
- You may also consider taking an antibiotic or anti-bacterial medicine to fight the infection cause by the tonsil stone.
- If none of these methods work for you, a consultation from the dentist or a physician will be necessary in such cases.
